Although there is no proof as to Google’s “official” SEO rules, there have been time tested ways to help improve your Search Engine Optimization.
Keywords are your friend. Do you have a business in hair dressing? It’s important that people googling can find you. Now, a simple keyword would be “salon”. Sure, this may work, but what are your strengths? What do clients love about your salon? Maybe your client isn’t even looking for a salon yet, they may want advice about “How to blowout my hair“. If you offer them advice on your website (and subtly tell them you offer the service) they just may think of you!

If you simply list your website as “Hair Salon” you may never receive hits from this potential client. Even listing highlights on your website under “services/treatments” may not be enough. Google needs to see that you are an authority when it comes to “Highlights”. I’ve also seen some salons that like to make their services pages seem “fancier”. Instead of laymen’s terms they use technical terms for hair procedures in order to establish their position. This does the exact opposite of its intention. If no one is searching for what you talk about, no one is going to find you.
